On the cliffs just outside Hermanus, this spectacular sea view property, named fter a British ship that sank in Walker Bay in the 19th-century, was recently opened by Liz Biden, owner of La Residence.
In keeping with its maritime namesake, the eight suites are decorated with ship's antiques and most offer ocean vistas (some from the free-standing bath tubs) - perfect for watching the calving Southern Right whales in season and for looking out to sea at all times of the year.
Set amongst the unique flora of the Cape and with direct access to two sandy beaches, yet just a leisurely twenty minutes stroll along a coastal path into the centre of town, this is the ultimate seaside retreat. You can book one of the suites or the whole property, and there is a gym, spa and a two-tier pool if you want to work off some of the fine seafood on offer in the restaurant. Hermanus itself is a haven of activity: walking along the coastal plain, shark diving for the adventurous, tours of local vineyards, horse-riding and golf - to name but a few activities on offer.
Birkenhead House has eight opulently appointed sea-facing suites offers expansive vistas of Hermanus Walker Bay. From the comfort of the residence, you can look forward to sighting the majestic Southern Right whales that enter the sheltered waters of Walker Bay every year to calve. Other attractions include a gym and treatment centre, and a dual-level swimming pool located in a sheltered courtyard. Not forgetting, of course, Hermanus ’ two best swimming beaches which are just a stone’s throw away. At Birkenhead House world-class cuisine is a matter of course. Lavish meals and seafood delicacies are served up daily, and room service will be happy to oblige guests with a sumptuous breakfast in bed.
The delightful gardens at Birkenhead House offer inspiration as you stroll through the sunny courtyards. Designed in house, the gardens are pristine. Vivid masses of blue and white pansies float in ceramic pots, profuse brilliant petunias, borders of scented deep purple French lavender and fragrant rows of pale lemon Graham Thomas roses.

The menus at Birkenhead House are created by Chef Devon Matthews from breakfast on the terrace and light lunches overlooking the ocean to glamorous dinners by candlelight. Devon orchestrates the wedding lunch, a perfect feast of fascinating flavours, marrying well with Bouchard Finlayson's award winning wines.
The style of Bouchard Finlayson's highly acclaimed 'Kaaimansgat' Crocodile's Lair Chardonnay is an exciting move away from new world Chardonnay. It has a rich citrus fruit flavour enhanced by a gentle use of the best French oak. A natural match complementing one of Devon's signature dishes, lightly grilled linefish on an unctuous spring onion mash layered with aubergine and topped with sautéed baby tomatoes.
